sort
Also
known as rotate sort or criss/cross.
If sorting is desired and two different
orientations of the same paper are loaded
(8˝ xii and 11x8 ˝) the paper will be
fed from both of these paper sources
so that each set of collated copies
is complete and stacked 90 degrees from
the one below and above

copied onto a different paper stock
and/or color making a special section
at the back of a report
APS
Automatic
Paper Selection original size is detected
by platen or document feeder, while
matching copy paper size is fed from
appropriate paper source (also known
as Auto Paper Sensing)
APSS

size is not automatically detected)
auto
automatic
auto
bin separation mode
upon
completion of a collated or stacked
job, bins raise and separate for unloading
auto
duplexing
a
stack of 1-sided or 2-sided originals
can be duplexed unattended (the stack
of originals may or may not need to
be turned over, and the copies never
need to be touched)
auto
job start
copying
operation begins automatically if operator
has input selection and pressed print
key during warm-up
auto
page sizing
if
different size originals are stacked
in an ADF, R etc. and AMS is on, each
will be reduced or enlarged to fit onto
the same size copy paper
auto
shifting
creates
a margin on both sides of a copy when
auto duplexing if margin shift feature
is selected, e.g front is shifted to
right and back to left (may require
original to be po-sitioned differently
than when simplexing)
auto
sort mode
sorter
is automatically activated for sort’
mode, if more than one copy of a stack
of originals is requested
b
bin(s)
background
numbers
imprint
of faint numbers in the background that
manages confidential documents by marking
each set # to discourage unauthorized
copying
bias
voltage
part
of the xerographic process. In an analog
copier, bias helps to reduce background,
resulting in a cleaner copy. In a digital
copier, bias develops the latent image
by increasing potential difference.
bidirect
bidirectional,
referring to the way the sorting occurs
in two directions, from top to bottom
then from bottom to top, repeated until
the sorting job is completed
Bindexer
3-bin
collating device used between the copier’s
processing module and the finisher/binder
Black/white
reverse
Digital
effect: Also known as negative/positive
(-/+). Black prints white & white prints
black.
Booklet
Making
a
function of digital systems whereby
consecutive originals are fed through
the document feeder and rearranged in
memory for proper book page sequence
onto 8˝x11 (reduced) or 11 xl7
Book
Shadow Removal
eliminates
any shadow in the spine area when copying
a book
Border
Erase
eliminates
any lines or shadows along all 4 edges
(edge erase)
Bypass
Device
which allows feeding of media (paper,
etc.) which is not loaded in a cassette,
drawer or elevator unit. Typically,
bypass allows copying of occasional
and exotic materials; index cards, transparencies,
labels, etc. If the bypass allows multiple
sheets it is described as the amount
of sheets it holds (such as “50 sheet
bypass”). It it allows only one sheet
to be fed, it is described as “Sheet
bypass.” If it is a smart bypass it
is described as such, with the maximum
sheet total also mentioned.
Capable
technician
or key operator must activate a special
function which is otherwise not accessible
to the operator
Cascade
non-sort
feature that enables every sorter bin
to act as a receiving tray, switching
the exiting of copies from one bin to
the next, so that a long copying job
can be run until completed and exceed
the non-sort tray capacity
CCD
Charge
coupled device. In digital copiers.
The unit that optically scans the reflected
image of the original document and converts
it to digital signals for the microprocessor.
CD

chapterization
automatic
feature that starts a chapter on a right-hand
page in a report without having to account
for a blank left-hand page with a blank
original
cold
laser
laser
that has not made any copies or prints
and has settled into its resting mode.
Typically, will require spin up time
before making first copy. The result
is greatly varying first copy times.
Sometimes as much as 10 second spread
between cold & warm.
Collator
or collation
the
act of separating copies into collated
or sorted sets. Analog copiers use mechanical
collators or sorters. These send one
copy per bin, and then send the next
copy of the next original to each bin,
starting with the last page and finishing
with the first page. Digital copiers
(if equipped with adequate memory) do
not need a mechanical collator. They
are usually capable of storing the entire
job in memory, and then printing out
one set at a time, beginning with the
first page. In addition to this collating
function, digital copiers have other
methods of making it more convenient
for the operator to retrieve the collated
sets. They may be offset, meaning that
each completed set is shifted approximately
1” away from the one before it. They
may be rotated 90 degrees; one set is
fed landscape orientation, the next
is portrait, then landscape, etc. Also,
see criss-cross sort, rotate sort.
continuous
set completion
sets
continue to be made if multi-output
device tray(s) have been emptied, so
maximum number of sets is limited by
quantity selection limit, such as 99
or 999, not number of trays
continuous
sorting/staple-sorting
sets
continue to be made if sorter/staple-sorter
bins have been emptied, so maximum number
of sets is limited by quantity selection
limit, such as 99 or 999, not number
of bins
copies
images
produced on paper after a document has
been placed on the platen glass or fed
through a document feeder. Note that
the output of the machine is often expressed
in “copies” even if pages have been
produced in fax or printer mode (in
the case of digital equipment).
Copies
in first (1st) minute
When
running our productivity tests, stop
watch and “Start” button are pressed
at the same time, to determine how many
copies are run during the 1st minute,
which is sometimes substantially less
than the “copies per minute.”
Copies
Per Minute or CPM
Standard
way of describing the actual running
rate of a copier. Is not necessarily
the same as copies in first minute.
In our testing, the stop watch begins
when the fist copy lands in the exit
tray. At 60 seconds, all copies in the
tray are counted. CPM, otherwise known
as PPM - Pages Per Minute, is the measure
of a machines engine speed when making
copies.
Copy
cartridge
Typically
refers to a disposable drum module.
Corona
Wire
A
corona wire is a charged wire that draws
the toner off the drum onto the paper.
Digital
or Digital Copier
Digital
is the state-of-the-art technology widely
used today. Digital copiers scan and
digitize originals before reproducing
them, essentially converting images
to computerized data. And heres an interesting
fact: All multifunction copiers are
digital, but not all digital copiers
are multifunctional.
Duplex
Duplex
refers to the process of double-sided
copying.
Fuser
The
fuser is the part that melts the toner
onto the paper. After the toner is transferred
onto the paper, the fuser applies heat
and pressure to ensure that the toner
stays on the paper permanently.
Image
Shift
Image
shift is a common feature that allows
you to shift the image of your original
a little way across the page to leave
a margin for binding.
LCB
or LCC or LCT
LCB
(Large capacity bin), LCC (Large capacity
cassette) or LCT (Large capacity tray)
generally refers to a paper tray holding
1,000 sheets or more.
Multifunctional
Multifunctional
digital copiers can also serve as computer
printers and, in some cases, fax machines
or scanners.
Platen
The
platen is the glass surface on which
the originals are placed for copying.
PPM
or Pages Per Minute
PPM
is a measure of a machines engine speed
when making copies.
RADF
or Reversing Automatic Document Feeder
An
RADF can handle double as well as single
sided originals. RADFs on analog copiers
need bins in order to produce multiple
sets of multi-page-documents. RADFs
on digital copiers do not need sorter
bins providing that the machine operates
with SOPM (Scan Once/Print Many) technology.
Reduction/Enlargement
The
reduction/enlargement feature allows
you to either reduce or enlarge an image
when producing copies.
Resolution
Resolution
is a measure of how a digital copier
scans and prints copies. It is generally
either 400 dpi (dots per inch) or 600
dpi. When we say that the resolution
is 600 dpi it means that the scanned
image consists of 600 x 600, or 36,000
dots per square inch.
Scan
Once/Print-many or SOPM
Scan
once/print-many is the reproduction
method of digital machines that scan
in a copy of the original once, digitize
the image and store it, using the stored
copy to reproduce many copies.
Simplex
Simplex
refers to single-sided copying.
Sorter
The
sorter is a multi-bin device for collating
pages as you make copies of multi-page
originals.
Toner
Toner
is a dry ink powder which has been electricallt
charged. Toner cartridges are used in
copiers, laser printer, and fax machines.
Zoom
Zoom
is part of the reduction/enlargement
feature that allows you to select the
amount of magnification you want. The
zoom feature normally is expressed in
1% increments. Most analog copiers have
a zoom range of somewhere between 60-140%
and 50-200%. Digital models have ranges
of 25-400% and wider.
